PENG Xiu-wen
PENG Xiu-wen is a famous conductor and composer on traditional Chinese
music. He has been the conductor of China Broadcast Chinese Orchestra
since the founding of the orchestra in 1953. He has visited the
Soviet Union, Italy, Germany, Yugoslavia, Romania, Malta, Albania,
Japan and Hong Kong with the orchestra and was warmly welcomed.
Under the direction of PENG Xiu-wen, an ensemble took part in competition
in the 6th (1957) World Youth Festival in Moscow and won a gold
medal. In 1981, 1986 and 1991, he guest conducted the Hong Kong
Chinese Orchestra.

Xiu-wen was born into a family which had a tradition of music and
he was influenced greatly by his elders who loved traditional Chinese
music and operas. He started to learn playing Erhu, Pipa and violin
since his teenage.
Over
the past thirty years, apart from devoting himself to conducting,
he has arranged and written a large number of musical works over
600 pieces for folk instruments. His popular works in the 1950's
and 1960's which has also won academic acclaim include "Full-
blown Blossoms under the Bright Moon", "General's Command",
"The Dance of the Yao’s Tribe People", "A Party
in the Village" etc.
From
late 70's to the 80's, PENG Xiu-wen intentionally developed Chinese
traditional music symphonically, To this end, he wrote Erhu Concerto
"The Indomitable Su Wu", Symphonic Poem "Flowing
Water" (which won a first class prize for Countrywide Music
Composition Competition in 1984), Symphonic Poem "Nostalgia"
(which won a third class prize for Countrywide Music Composition
Competition in 1984), Fantasia "Terra- cotta Warriors",
Sound Poem "A Crane in the Clouds", "The Four Seasons
Suite" and "December Suite", etc. He also adapted
some famous western compositions for Chinese orchestra such as Bizet's
"Carmen Suite", Debussy's "Nuages", Stravinsky's
"The Firebird Suite" and Mussorgsky's "Pictures at
an Exhibition". Recordings of these famous works have been
acclaimed by music lover.

Xiu-wen was the Art Director of China Broadcast Art Troupe, Music
Director of China Broad- cast Chinese Orchestra, the Executive Member
of China Musicians Association. He is also the Deputy Director of
Traditional Chinese Music Committee of China Musicians Association
and President of Chinese Orchestra Society.
Maestro
Peng Xiuwen past away on 1996 on Beijing due to cancer. When the
time he is ill, he still composing the new orchestra piece-"Festival
Overture" to celebrate the return of Hong Kong to China. Thanks
to maestro, no him,, no Chinese Orchestra. Forever maestro.
